The politically charged Riot Act (2002) was a solid rock album, but its intensity did not approach the eponymous Pearl Jam (2006). Something to do with the tiny paws, I suppose. Backspacer, a mere novella at only 36 and a half minutes, was produced by Brendan O’Brien, who helmed what many Pearl Jam connoisseurs consider the band’s four finest albumsVs., Vitalogy.
Once again, Jeff Ament’s bass playing keeps drawing me in to this one. “Animal” brings the groove in a way that none of the tracks that Ten did.
